The Micro Composition Project 2023 has commissioned four local composers to create short works of five minutes or less.

About this event

The Micro Composition Project commissions four short works annually to advance equitable new music opportunities for artists and audiences in Central Indiana. Now in its fourth year, the Micro Composition Project 2023 (MCP23) has commissioned four local composers to create short works of five minutes or less that will premiere at Central Christian Church on Saturday, August 26.

MCP23 is an artist-led initiative, with Classical Music Indy (CMI) encouraging the composers' work to reflect the world around them, create audience relevance and connections, and reconceive notions of genre. The composers’ only parameters are 1) the works must be five minutes or less, and 2) instrumentation must be for mixed chamber ensemble.

The MCP23 composers are Eliza Brown, Clockwork Janz, Gabrielle Cerberville, and Eric Salazar. CMI’s director of community engagement, Eric Salazar, will also participate artistically. Salazar will also be a featured performer on clarinet and bass clarinet. CMI’s open selection process ensures composers reflect a balanced representation of gender identity and ethnicity. The MCP23 works will be performed by one of Indianapolis’ leading chamber ensembles, Forward Motion, whose members are pioneers of newly composed music.
